Serhan Aytan was born in 1962 in Istanbul. In 1976 he entered the Istanbul Technical University State Conservatory of Turkish Music, where he began to explore the music of Tanburi Cemil Bey, Şerif Muhiddin Targan und Yorgo Bacanos. After graduating in 1987, he undertook postgraduate study at the ITU's Institute of Social Sciences, completing his Master's degree in 1995. He also began to teach oud at the Institute, which he continued to do until the year 2000. Between 2000 and 2005 he was a member of the faculty at Haliç University's Conservatory. Aytan has given recitals in Europe and the USA, and has also published a book on the compositions of Dede Efendi. He also pratices the ancient art of ebru or paper marbling.
