Mehmet Bitmez

Biography

Mehmet Emin Bitmez was born in Şanlıurfa, Turkey. His grandfather, father and uncle were all musicians, so it was natural for Mehmet to enter the Istanbul Technical University State Conservatory of Turkish Music, from which he graduated in 1980. The following year he became a teaching assistant at the Conservatory, and he has taught there ever since. During his musical education he studied oud with Cinuçen Tanrıkorur and Mutlu Torun, and he also began a formal study of the approach to melody and performance taken by the great tanbur virtuoso Tanburi Cemil Bey - this work led to the award of a Master's degree in 1990. Mehmet Bitmez's own style of oud playing is influenced by Şerif Muhittin Targan, Nevres Bey, Yorgo Bacanos and Cinuçen Tanrıkorur. As well as being a virtuoso oud player, he is also proficient on the lavta and tanbur. He has given concerts around the world, both as a solo performer and as a member of various ensembles and orchestras. He also masterminded the 'Üç Ud'un Hikâyesi' (History of Three Ouds) project together with Kyriakos Kalaitzidis and Naseer Shamma.
