Bilen Işıktaş


Bilen Işıktaş was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1980. He began to learn the oud in 1996, taking lessons with oud maker Cengiz Sarıkuş and also strongly influenced by Polat Tezel. In 2002 he began taking lessons with Ertan Özkaya at the Istanbul Technical University State Conservatory of Turkish Music. The same year he also met Yurdal Tokcan, whose musical approach Işıktaş decided to adopt. In 2003 he entered the ITU Conservatory, receiving lessons in music theory and oud from Osman Nuri Özpekel and Mehmet Bitmez, and studying the works of masters including Şerif Muhiddin Targan, Nevres Bey and Yorgo Bacanos. The following year he formed the oud trio 3DEM together with Bekir Şahin Baloğlu and Sami Dural, and performed widely with this group. In 2008 he embarked on a Master's degree at the ITU Conservatory, which led to a teaching position there.
