Driss El Maloumi
إدريس الملومي

Biography

Driss El Maloumi was born in Agadir, Morocco in 1970. He went on to obtain a Master's degree in Arabic literature from the Ibn Zohr University in Agadir in 1993. At the same time he studied both classical Middle Eastern music and Western music, and was awarded prizes for his oud playing by the Conservatoire National de Musique in Rabat for three successive years between 1992 and 1994. He also absorbed influences from tribal Berber music and jazz; indeed his first recording was a joint effort with saxophonist Alban Darche. He has worked with a number of other musicians from Europe, Iran, India, North Africa and the Middle East, but perhaps his most innovative project was 3MA, a collaboration with musicians from Madagascar and Malawi.
