Hussein El Masry

Biography

Hussein El Masry was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1952 into a musical family. He took up the piano at an early age and gained a familiarity with Western classical music, but later switched to the oud and went on to study at the Institute of Arab Music in Cairo. He graduated in 1975 and two years later moved to Paris, France, which brought him into contact with musicians from around the world. His first recording was made in 1981, and this was followed by many more that showcased his driving, rhythmic style of oud playing. El Masry currently lives in the French city of Montpellier and performs regularly across Europe and the Middle East.

Entre Nil et Gange/Between the Nile and the Ganges

On this recording Hussein el-Masry is accompanied by the sitar player Narenda Bataju, who was first heard on the album Zagal (see above). Also featured are percussion master Adel Shams el-Din on riqq and daff, and Hanif Khan on tabla. The music takes the form of a single, long improvisation almost an hour in length.
