Issa Murad
عيسى مراد

Issa Murad was born in Bethlehem, Palestine, and was taught the rudiments of oud and singing by his father, who was inspired by the music of Farid Al-Atrash. In 1998, at the age of sixteen, he enrolled at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Palestine, and in 2001 won the Marcel Khalife award for the best oud player in Palestine. He then moved to Cairo, Egypt for two years to study at the House of Oud with Naseer Shamma and others. After a spell teaching oud and Middle Eastern music back at the Conservatory in Palestine, Issa moved to Paris in 2007 to study for a Master's degree in Ethnomusicology at the Sorbonne, with a thesis on the foreign elements in the music of Mohamed Abdel Wahab. In 2012 he established the 'Joussour' ensemble with the aim of fusing Middle Eastern music with jazz - he is also the founder and artistic director of the Balk'Or Project to promote the music of the Middle East and Balkans in France. In 2014 he took up a teaching position at the American University of Cairo to teach ethnomusicology, Middle Eastern music and oud. Issa currently divides his time between Paris and Cairo, and as well as performing with Joussour (which released their first album in 2016), he is also part of 'Trio Hiwar', consisting of oud, percussion and Indian bansuri flute; 'Trio Safar', which performs classical Arab repertoire; and the 'Al-Adwar' group, dedicated to music from the Arab renaissance and Sufi tradition.
