Serhat Şaşman


Serhat Şaşman was born in Bandırma in north-eastern Turkey in 1960. He began to learn the mandolin and accordion from an early age, and was also a member of the school choir. In 1979 his family moved to Istanbul, where he spent two years at the Üsküdar Music Society, before entering the Istanbul Technical University State Conservatory of Turkish Music. He studied oud with Halil Aksoy and also participated in the school's orchestra. In 1985 he joined the Izmir State Classical Turkish Music Chorus as an oud player and singer.
