Joseph Tawadros

Biography

Joseph Tawadros was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1983 and moved to Australia three years later. Several members of his family were well known musicians in Egypt, so it was only natural that Joseph would continue the tradition. His oud lessons began with a family friend, Mohamed Youssef, and he studied violin with the celebrated Egyptian violinist Esawi Daghir; he also plays several other instruments including nay, qanun and cello. Joseph completed a Batchelor of Music degree at the University of New South Wales in 2006, which included a pioneering analysis of advanced techniques and applications in oud playing. In the same year he was also the youngest recipient of the prestigious Freedman Fellowship for Classical Music. He has toured extensively in Europe, America, Asia and the Middle East and performed and recorded with a wide range of artists from diverse musical backgrounds; he has also composed music for film and theatre. Joseph currently lives in Sydney, Australia and was awarded the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Music Award for Best World Music Album three years in succession from 2012 to 2014. He is accompanied on most of his recordings and in his concerts by his brother James Tawadros, an accomplished percussionist.
