Coşkun Yava was born in 1967 in Berlin, Germany. After completing his primary education there, he moved to Istanbul, Turkey to attend secondary school. He later went on to obtain a degree in Business Administration from the Military Academy in Ankara and a Master's degree in the same subject from Selçuk University in Konya. While playing guitar during his university years he was introduced to the oud by the luthier Sabri Göktepe; this led to him studying Turkish Classical Music part-time with Muzaffer Şenduran, which was followed by oud lessons with Emin Safa Sağbaş. In 2005 he began lessons with Cinuçen Tanrıkorur's former student, Yusuf Koçak, who helped him complete his study of Tanrıkorur's oud method. Yava currently works as a manager in an information technology organization in Ankara and since 2013 he has been a member of the Engürü Turkish Music Assembly in Ankara.
